Content is the driving force for many initiatives in digital marketing. With Google’s recent penguin and panda updates, content has surged to the forefront of effective link building and internet marketing and it’s the reason why content marketing is on every digital marketers’ lips. The year 2013 offers new opportunities for sites to take advantage of content as a way of further enhancing their sites and marketing efforts – and for it to happen you should be aware of the content trends that will develop this year.
Ann Smarty, owner of popular guest blogging site MyBlogGuest, lives and breathes content. Her website is attracting a lot of attention from website owners, writers and digital marketing agencies because it has made guest blogging more accessible. Currently, MyBlogGuest has 26673 blogs using the site and about 2000 to 3000 articles are published through their site on a weekly basis. According to Smarty, content marketing will still remain very much the same as it did three years ago. The name of the game will still be formulating a unique content strategy that takes into account the brand’s niche. But what is going to be a hot trend for the year will be the way authors contribute to the weight of the content.
Author Rank is a hot trend
“2013 will be a hot year for author rank. For brands, it means developing strong author brands and showing people behind content.” Smarty explained that Google’s increased attention towards author rank will shift a lot of attention towards personal author brands. The authors will now help drive the validity and weight of the published content.
She suggests that companies implement some new tactics for 2013, namely, to promote talented authors within the company, take advantage of Google Plus authorship information and identify who the noteworthy authors are in the brand’s niche and building relationships with them.
Smarty believes Google’s recent updates has shifted the focus on content. “Google Penguin rather demonstrated how unreliable link building is. We can no longer focus on links.” She further added that Penguin update made digital marketers stop and think, which she believes is ultimately a good thing.
Content promotion trends
Smarty also shared that another upcoming content trend for 2013 is content curation. She explained that content curation involves “collecting information around your brand or key concept and then promoting that collection across various channels and content curation sites.”
She also believes that app development will pick up very soon because the cost of developing an app has gone down significantly that even small businesses can afford it. She added that as a logical progression of this trend, content marketing through game development may also take off.
